GEMSTONE VS TRIMLIGHTVS CELEBRIGHT.

All three do the same core job. The differences are the track, the app and how the warranty works, and the install matters more than any of them.

Gemstone, Trimlight and Celebright are all permanent track systems sold and installed through dealers: individually controlled LEDs in a channel under the roofline, run from a phone app. None is clearly the best. They differ in how the track looks, which app you live with, and how the warranty is split between the manufacturer and the dealer. Govee and Enbrighten are a different category: kits sold to install yourself.

The table below is what each manufacturer's own site says, with the link, so you can check it. Below that: which one fits your house, and the questions to ask any dealer.

Trimlight

WARRANTY STRUCTURE
The product warranty covers components for their rated life of 50,000 hours. Labour is the dealer's warranty, at least one year per Trimlight, and a fee may apply outside it.

Celebright

What's the same across all three

More than the sales pitches suggest. All three give you individually controlled colour LEDs (each light can be its own colour), a low-profile channel under the roofline, app control with scenes and schedules, and presets for holidays and celebrations. If a dealer tells you a competitor's system can't do colours or can't be scheduled, they're selling rather than informing.

Gemstone vs Trimlight

Gemstone is based in Calgary; Trimlight in Utah. Both sell through dealers. Trimlight publishes three light spacings (6, 9 or 12 inches apart) and a channel colour-matched to the roofline with the bulbs sitting slightly out of it. Gemstone describes a custom track chosen to match the house and a separate warm white light alongside the colour. On warranty, Gemstone splits the lights and the system parts and leaves labour to the dealer; Trimlight covers components for a rated number of hours and leaves labour to the dealer too. Look at a real installed house of each in daylight before deciding on looks.

Trimlight vs Celebright

Both are dealer-installed. Celebright runs a 24-volt system it describes as patented and offers more than 11 track profiles, which matters if your fascia (the board along the roof edge that the eavestrough hangs on) is an unusual shape or colour. Trimlight's Edge controller works with Alexa and Google Home. Celebright's warranty transfers to the next owner when you sell; Trimlight's labour terms depend on the dealer. Ask each for the warranty in writing.

Govee and Enbrighten: the install-it-yourself kits

These are sold to homeowners in fixed lengths, up to about 150 feet, and mount with clips and adhesive tape (Enbrighten includes screws). They cost less up front. The trade-off is that you, or whoever you hire, are fastening them to the roof edge, and nobody is responsible for that roof edge unless you make them.

What matters more than the brand

Install quality. Every one of these fastens into your soffit (the underside of the overhang) and fascia, and every one can let water in, block attic ventilation or cause damage a roof warranty excludes when it's mounted badly. A good install of any of them outlasts a bad install of the one you preferred. Ask where exactly the channel fastens and who makes the electrical connection before you compare light counts.

What to ask every dealer

Regardless of brand:

  • Can I see one you installed, lit at night and unlit in daylight?
  • Who makes the electrical connection, and is it permitted?
  • Does the channel fasten into fascia, soffit, or the roof deck? (The roof deck is the wrong answer.)
  • What's the hardware warranty, what's your workmanship warranty, and who administers each?
  • Does anything stop working if I don't pay a subscription?
  • Will this void my roofing warranty?

How permanent roofline lighting works

Permanent roofline lighting is four parts: a slim channel mounted along the roof edge, a run of LEDs inside it that can each be set to their own colour, a low-voltage power supply, and a controller you run from an app. It stays up year-round, and the connectors, seals and electronics usually limit its life more than the LEDs do.

Roofline lighting and your roof: mounting it without damage

Permanent lights should fasten into sound fascia or solid soffit below the metal drip edge at the roof's edge, never through your shingles or roof deck, and stay clear of the soffit vents your attic breathes through. On a Calgary roof edge, where water drains and ice builds every winter, every fastener also has to be sealed.

Is one of them clearly the best?

No, and be sceptical of anyone who says otherwise. They're competitive products, and the differences that matter depend on your house and which app you'd rather use. The install is a bigger variable than the brand.

Is Gemstone a Calgary company?

Its own site gives a business address in southeast Calgary. Trimlight's site gives an address in West Jordan, Utah. Celebright's site lists dealers across North America.

Are the Govee or Enbrighten kits worth it?

They can be, on a simple roofline, if the person mounting them knows the roof edge. They come in fixed lengths and mount with clips and tape, so the risk isn't the lights, it's the fastening.

Can you service a system another company installed?

Sometimes, depending on the brand and what's wrong. We'll look at the roofing side of a bad install regardless of who did it, because that's the part that damages the house.

What does each one cost?

Dealers price per foot of roofline and few publish it. Ours: about $15 to $19 a foot for a smart LED system and $25 to $32 for a permanent aluminum track system, before GST. The cost page explains what moves it.
