Seasonal install is a service you buy every November and unbuy every January. Permanent is a fixture you install once. The comparison people usually run is purely financial, and that misses most of what actually decides it.

We install permanent lighting, so treat what follows accordingly — but the cases where seasonal wins are real, and they're listed here because pretending otherwise would be the kind of sales copy this site doesn't write.

Where permanent clearly wins

You've paid for seasonal install more than about three years running.
You want the house lit outside December. Seasonal is Christmas or nothing; permanent does Halloween, Canada Day, Stampede, game nights, and plain warm white year-round.
You have a two-storey, a steep roof, or anything that makes a ladder a genuinely bad idea. This is the safety argument and it's the one that actually moves people.
You're tired of being on someone else's install and takedown schedule in the two busiest weeks of their year.
You're re-roofing anyway — doing both together is materially less work than retrofitting later.

Where seasonal is the better call

You're selling within a year or two. A permanent fixture is a poor investment on a house you're leaving, whatever it does for listing photos.
You rent, or you're in a condo or an HOA with exterior restrictions. Check before you spend anything.
Your fascia needs replacing. Mounting a permanent system to failing fascia is throwing good money after bad — do the fascia first, or stay seasonal until you do.
You genuinely like changing the look completely every year. Permanent gives you enormous colour flexibility but the physical run doesn't move.
You want lights in trees, along paths, or around the yard. That's landscape lighting; roofline lighting doesn't do it.

The cost comparison, honestly

Permanent is a larger single cost, priced per linear foot. Seasonal is a smaller cost that repeats forever and rises with labour. Whether and when that crosses over depends entirely on what you currently pay and how long you'll be in the house — both of which are numbers we don't have. Anyone showing you a confident payback chart built it from assumptions about your situation that they made up.

The thing nobody prices

December in Calgary is dark by half past four and icy from November. Every year people are seriously injured hanging their own lights, and it happens for a decoration. If you're currently doing it yourself, the case for permanent isn't really financial.

Can I try seasonal first and switch later?

Of course, and plenty of people do exactly that. Nothing about hiring a seasonal installer this year makes a permanent install harder next year.

If I move, does it come with the house?

It's a permanent fixture, so yes — it stays. Which is why the sell-soon case above points at seasonal.

Will my HOA or condo board allow it?

Ask before you spend anything. Most Calgary detached-home communities have no issue, but some HOAs and most condo boards have exterior modification rules and getting told no afterwards is an expensive way to find out.

Is permanent lighting actually cheaper long-term?

It can be, and it depends on numbers only you have — what you pay now, and how long you'll be there. We're not going to hand you a payback figure built on guesses about your situation.
