STRAIGHTANSWERS.
A roof is a five-figure decision. Here are the questions homeowners actually ask us — answered the way we'd want them answered.
What happens to my warranty if Big Boy Roofing isn't around in five years?
Fair question — here's the honest answer. Your IKO manufacturer material warranty is held by the manufacturer, not by us: it covers the shingles (24 years+) no matter what happens to BBR. The 5-year workmanship warranty is our promise, in writing on the quote you sign. And the crew on the ladder has 10+ years on Calgary roofs; they're not going anywhere.
Why is the inspection paid, when other roofers do it for free?
Because a free inspection is paid for somewhere, and usually it's paid for by a sales pitch you didn't ask for. A roofer who only earns anything if they find a problem is a roofer with a reason to find one. Ours is a paid inspection producing an itemized written report — every slope photographed, documented to HAAG methodology, the same standard insurance adjusters are trained on. The fee is credited toward the work if you award us the job. And if your roof is fine, we say so and you keep the report. That's the part a free inspection can't afford to offer.
What if my insurance denies the claim partway through the job?
Rare, but here's how it works. If the claim is denied before we start, you owe nothing. If something changes mid-job, we stop, show you exactly where things stand, and walk you through the out-of-pocket options. You only ever pay for work actually completed — we don't hold a half-finished roof over your head.
Do you pull permits?
Calgary doesn't require a building permit for a standard like-for-like roof replacement on most single-family homes. If your job involves structural changes that do need one, we pull it and fold it into the quote — no separate runaround for you.
Do you do repairs, or only full replacements?
Both. If a repair will hold, we'll tell you so — even though the repair is the smaller cheque. We only recommend a full replacement when the roof actually needs one.
What does the inspection actually cost?
It depends on the job type — a repair diagnosis, a full hail assessment and a commercial flat roof are different amounts of work — so we'll tell you the number when you call rather than quote a figure here that's wrong for your situation. What's the same every time: the fee is credited toward the work if you award us the job, and you keep the written report either way.
How long does an install take?
Most Calgary single-family homes wrap in a couple of days, weather permitting. Booked call to warranty paperwork — most jobs inside a week. Insurance claims add time on the insurer's side — not ours.
Do I need to be home when you come out, or for the install?
For the inspection and the walk-through afterwards, yes — that visit exists so you can ask us anything before you commit, and it doesn't work if you're not there. It takes about 45 minutes. For the install itself you don't need to be home at all.
How do I choose between roofing contractors in Calgary?
Three checks before anyone comes over: search Alberta's consumer-protection register for a prepaid contractor licence (required for anyone taking payment before the work is finished), ask for a WCB Alberta clearance letter, and ask for a liability insurance certificate with the actual limit on it. Then four questions: is decking sheathing in the price, is flashing being replaced or reused, what happens if you find rot, and what isn't in this quote. We've written the long version — including the places we currently fail our own checklist.
Someone knocked on my door after the storm and said my claim is approved.
It can't be. Only your insurer approves a claim, and not before anyone has been on your roof. That line is a storm-chaser script and it usually comes with a request to sign something on the spot. Don't sign anything on a doorstep — from them or from us. If anyone offers to cover or waive your deductible, walk away: that's insurance fraud in Alberta and the exposure lands on you as the policyholder, not on the crew that leaves in October.
WE'LL TALK IT THROUGH.
Drop your name and number. We'll follow up and walk you through which path fits your roof — no commitment.
