WHICH STORMHIT YOUR ROOF?

Every major Calgary hail event from 2020 onward — the date, the areas hit, and what insurers paid out. If you're filing a claim, the date of loss is the first thing you'll be asked for.

CALGARY HAIL EVENTS

FOUR STORMS.
DIFFERENT HALVES
OF THE CITY.

Where you live decides which storm damaged your roof. The 2020 event hit the northeast, 2021 hit the south, and 2024 — the costliest hailstorm in Canadian history — hit the north.

  1. Calgary
    INSURED LOSS
    about $92 million
    ESTIMATE AS OF AUGUST 2025

A smaller event than the ones above it, and heavily weighted to vehicles — IBC reported that vehicle damage made up 65% of all claims. Roof damage from a storm this size tends to be patchy and street-by-street rather than city-wide, which is exactly the situation where an inspection is worth more than a guess from the ground.

  2. Northern Calgary and Strathmore
    INSURED LOSS
    $3.29 billion
    ESTIMATE AS OF AUGUST 2025
    CLAIMS
    more than 130,000

First reported at nearly $2.8 billion, then $3.25 billion in February 2025.

The costliest hailstorm in Canadian history and the second-costliest insured disaster the country has ever had. CatIQ recorded hail punching through vinyl siding, breaking windows, and severely damaging roofs, with Calgary International Airport among the damaged properties. If your roof is in north Calgary and you have never had it looked at since, this is almost certainly your date of loss.

  3. South Calgary
    INSURED LOSS
    over $600 million
    ESTIMATE AS OF REVISED ESTIMATE

Initially estimated by CatIQ at $247 million.

Hail plus serious flooding — streets, underpasses and parking lots went under. The estimate for this storm more than doubled from the first figure published, which is the clearest example on this page of why an early loss number should never be treated as the final one.

  4. Northeast Calgary, Airdrie and Rocky View County
    INSURED LOSS
    almost $1.2 billion
    ESTIMATE AS OF 2020 ESTIMATE
    CLAIMS
    roughly 70,000 homes and vehicles

Held the record as Canada's costliest hailstorm until August 2024 broke it, and ranked as the country's fourth-costliest natural disaster at the time. Note the area: this one hit the northeast, while 2021 hit the south and 2024 hit the north. Which storm damaged your roof depends heavily on where in the city you live.

Figures last checked against their sources on July 26, 2026. Insured-loss estimates are published by third parties and are revised — sometimes for years — after an event. Treat every number here as an estimate, not a final figure.

READING THESE NUMBERS

FIRST ESTIMATE
IS NEVER
THE LAST ONE.

Every storm on this page cost more than the first announcement said it did.

July 2021 was first put at $247 million and ended up over $600 million. August 2024 was announced at nearly $2.8 billion, revised to $3.25 billion, then to $3.29 billion a year later. Claims take years to close, and damage keeps surfacing long after the storm.

The practical version for a homeowner: hail damage that nobody noticed at the time is normal, not suspicious. A roof can be bruised and still look fine from the street for years, which is why the damage from a 2024 storm is still being found today.

Insured damage from hailstorms in Alberta over the past five years now stands at $6 billion.

YOU'VE GOT A DATE.
NOW WHAT?

Don't sit on it

Most policies expect damage to be reported promptly — often within a year of the storm date, and some carriers want it sooner. The longer you wait, the harder it gets to tie damage to a specific storm instead of plain wear. Check your own policy for the exact window.

Check your deductible first

A lot of Calgary policies use a percentage deductible — 2–5% of your home's insured value, not a flat $1,000. On a $600,000 home, 2% is $12,000. It's on your declarations page. Know the number before you file.

Get the roof looked at

Hail bruising is hard to confirm from the ground. Our inspection is free, we document against the storm date, and if there's nothing worth claiming we'll tell you that instead of talking you into a claim.
