Edmonton roofs fail differently from Calgary roofs. Edmonton gets less hail and more snow, a longer and colder winter, and a shorter season for roofing work. Here the problem we look for first is usually an ice dam, not a hailstone.

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms along the lower edge of the roof. Heat escaping from the house melts snow higher up, the water runs down, and it refreezes at the cold edge. The water behind it backs up under the shingles and into the house. The fix is mostly in the attic: insulation and ventilation (air moving under the roof deck so it stays cold). New shingles alone don't stop it.

What we check on an Edmonton roof

The same documented inspection we do in Calgary: every slope photographed and written up itemized. In a colder, snowier climate a few things get more of our attention.

  • Attic ventilation and insulation, because that's what decides whether ice dams form.
  • Ice and water shield, the self-sealing membrane laid under the shingles at the eaves and in the valleys (where two slopes meet), which is the last line of defence when water backs up.
  • Water stains on the underside of the roof deck and frost in the attic, which show warm air getting where it shouldn't.
  • Hail and wind damage after a storm. Edmonton gets less hail than Calgary, not none.

A shorter season

Shingles need warmth to seal down properly, and Edmonton's roofing season is shorter than Calgary's. If you're planning a replacement, getting the inspection and the written quote done early gives you the most choice of dates. Every quote is written for your roof, after we've looked at it.

The same terms as Calgary

A roof replacement in Edmonton carries the same 5-year workmanship warranty as one in Calgary, and a repair the same 1-year workmanship warranty on the work we did, plus the manufacturer's warranty. The shingles are IKO: Cambridge, Dynasty (the line we recommend) or Nordic. On an insurance claim, you file with your insurer and we document the damage and meet the adjuster.

Finding a roof leak: where the water is really coming from

The stain on your ceiling is where the water landed, not where it got in: water runs along the roof boards and rafters first, so the real entry point is usually higher up, at a pipe boot, flashing, a valley or a skylight. Look from the attic and the ground, never from a wet or icy roof, and in a Calgary winter rule out melting attic frost first, because it looks exactly like a leak.

Seasonal roof maintenance checklist for Calgary homes

Most roof maintenance is looking, and you can do nearly all of it from the ground and the attic: clean eavestroughs in spring and late fall, check the attic for frost after cold snaps and for stains after heavy rain, and trim branches off the roof. In Calgary, add a look after every hail or wind storm, and call a pro for anything that means walking on the roof.

Wind damage to shingles: what it looks like and what it means

Wind damage shows up as creased, torn, lifted or missing shingles, most often at the eaves, edges and ridges where uplift is strongest. A few missing shingles often means the ones beside them have lost their seal too, so photograph the damage, have the slope checked and read your policy before deciding whether to claim.

Hail damage or wear? Telling shingle problems apart

Hail leaves a random scatter of hits, often soft bruises that still have granules in them, and it usually dents gutters, vents and other soft metal on the house too. Blisters, even granule loss, scuffs along a walking path and popped nails come from age, manufacturing or installation instead, and that difference decides what your insurance covers.

Ice dams in Calgary: why they form and how to stop them

An ice dam is a ridge of ice along the roof edge that forms when heat leaking into the attic melts the snow and the water refreezes at the cold eaves, then backs up under the shingles. Calgary's chinooks run that melt-and-freeze cycle many times a winter, and the lasting fix is in the attic, with air sealing, insulation and ventilation, not on the roof.

Insurance Claims

The roof insurance claim, step by step

An Alberta roof claim goes in a set order: tell your insurer in writing, stop further damage, document everything, get the roof inspected, agree the scope and estimate, file a sworn proof of loss, then settle and repair. Once a completed proof of loss is delivered, Alberta law says the loss is payable within 60 days unless your policy sets a shorter period.

QUESTIONS

STRAIGHT ANSWERS.

Do you work in Edmonton?

Yes. We're licensed in Edmonton and our install crews work in Edmonton and area. We're based in Calgary, and the area we work in runs from southern Alberta up to and including Edmonton.

How do I know I've found the right Big Boy Roofing?

We're Big Boy Roofing Corp., a Calgary-based roofing company working in Edmonton and area. Our phone number is (825) 521-7002 and our email is contact@bigboyroofing.ca. If the business you're looking for has a different number, it's a different company.

What should I ask an Edmonton roofer that I wouldn't ask in Calgary?

Ask about ventilation and ice dams before you ask about shingle brands. In a colder, snowier climate the failure you're most likely to get is an ice dam backing water under the shingles, and that's an attic ventilation and insulation problem. A quote that only talks about shingles is missing the bigger risk.

A storm damaged my roof in Edmonton. What happens first?

Report the damage to your insurer. That's yours to do, and doing it promptly matters. We inspect and document the whole exterior, photographed slope by slope, and we can meet your adjuster on site so everyone is looking at the same roof.

Do you work with contractors, property managers and solar installers in Edmonton?

Yes. We have an agreement with an Edmonton solar installer to do the roof work on its projects, and we document and restore exteriors for adjusters, insurers, property managers and general contractors. The partners page explains how that works.
