REQUEST DOCUMENTATION

Big Boy Roofing is a Calgary-based roofing company, licensed in Edmonton, with install crews working in Edmonton and area. For claims work we do two things: outsourced inspection and claim documentation, and the restoration that follows.

The documentation is built the same way whoever orders it and whatever it finds. A report that changes with the client is no use to anyone reviewing it, including the client. If you're a homeowner, the insurance claims page explains the process from your side.

What the report contains

One site visit, the whole exterior, written up so someone who wasn't on the roof can follow the reasoning.

  • Slope-by-slope assessment with test squares (a marked sample area on each slope where hits are counted), to Haag's published methodology.
  • Photographs with a scale reference, keyed to a diagram of the roof.
  • Collateral damage: dents in soft metals, vents, eavestrough, downspouts, siding and AC fins, the evidence that separates hail from wear.
  • An itemized scope that separates storm damage from wear and conditions that were already there.
  • Reviewed by insurance professionals.

Scope by trade

A storm rarely stops at the roof, so the scope doesn't either. Under insurance restoration it covers:

  • Roof: shingles, ridge, valleys, flashing (the metal that seals joints and edges), vents and skylights.
  • Siding: impact marks, cracks and splits.
  • Soffit and fascia: the panels under the roof overhang and the board along its edge.
  • Eavestrough and downspouts.
  • Fencing and decking.

How an engagement works

Send us the property, the claim stage and what you need documented through the form below. We confirm the scope and a date for the site visit, inspect and document the whole exterior in that one visit, and deliver the written report. Where it helps, we meet the adjuster on site so the scope is agreed with everyone looking at the same roof. When the restoration comes to us, the work proceeds against the agreed scope.

Capacity

Our install crews work in Edmonton and area, and the area we work in runs from southern Alberta up to and including Edmonton. From spring 2027 we'll have regular replacement capacity across both Calgary and Edmonton. For a multi-property file, tell us how many buildings are involved and we'll give you a real date rather than a standard promise.

The roof insurance claim, step by step

An Alberta roof claim goes in a set order: tell your insurer in writing, stop further damage, document everything, get the roof inspected, agree the scope and estimate, file a sworn proof of loss, then settle and repair. Once a completed proof of loss is delivered, Alberta law says the loss is payable within 60 days unless your policy sets a shorter period.

Hail deductibles in Alberta: flat, percentage and why they've gone up

Many Alberta home policies now carry a separate hail deductible, usually a flat amount: industry reports in 2026 put it at $2,500 to $5,000 with many Calgary insurers, and up to $10,000 for homes without hail-resistant construction. Percentage deductibles exist but are less common here, and your hail deductible can change at renewal, so check your declarations page.

ACV vs RCV Roof Coverage in Alberta

Actual cash value (ACV) pays what your damaged roof was worth after age and wear; replacement cost value (RCV) pays what it costs to replace it. Many Alberta RCV policies pay the ACV amount first and release the held-back depreciation only after the work is done and invoiced, so the first cheque is often not the full settlement.

How Insurance Adjusters Assess Hail Damage

An adjuster is checking for functional hail damage, meaning damage that shortens the roof's life or lets water in, not just marks. They sample each slope with a test square, count the hits, check soft metals like gutters and vents for dents, and compare what they find against the insurer's threshold for replacement.

What a HAAG Inspection Report Contains

A HAAG inspection report documents roof damage to Haag's published methodology: a slope diagram, test squares, scaled photos, soft-metal damage and an itemized scope, so an adjuster can check each finding instead of taking a conclusion on trust. Haag certifies inspectors, not companies.

The Appraisal Clause: Disputing a Roof Claim in Alberta

If you and your insurer agree the damage is covered but disagree on what it costs to fix, Alberta's Insurance Act gives you a dispute process, often called appraisal: each side names a representative, the two pick an umpire, and they settle the amount without court. It decides the dollar figure, not whether something is covered.

QUESTIONS

STRAIGHT ANSWERS.

Who do you do documentation work for?

Adjusters, insurers, property managers and general contractors, as well as homeowners. The method is identical whoever commissions the report.

Do you negotiate claims for policyholders?

No. We document the damage, write the scope and meet the adjuster. The policyholder deals with their insurer. Negotiating a claim on someone's behalf is licensed adjuster work in Alberta.

What licensing and insurance do you carry?

We hold an Alberta prepaid contractor licence, which applies province-wide, and we're licensed in Edmonton. We carry WCB Alberta coverage and commercial general liability at $2,000,000, with certificates available on request before we attend.

Will you document a property that someone else inspected first?

Yes. Re-inspections and second opinions are a normal part of this work. We document what's there now and say plainly where our findings differ and why, without characterising another inspector's work beyond the evidence.

How fast is turnaround?

The field work is one visit. Report turnaround depends on volume and complexity, and we'll give you a real date when you send the file. After a major storm every queue is long, and we'd rather say so than miss a date you planned around.
