CALGARY CREW · OPEN BOOKING

The costliest hailstorm in Canadian history and the second-costliest insured disaster the country has ever had. CatIQ recorded hail punching through vinyl siding, breaking windows, and severely damaging roofs, with Calgary International Airport among the damaged properties. If your roof is in north Calgary and you have never had it looked at since, this is almost certainly your date of loss.

The numbers

First reported at nearly $2.8 billion, then $3.25 billion in February 2025. The current figure is $3.29 billion as of August 2025. Early loss numbers are routinely revised upward as claims are counted — treat any first figure as provisional.

  • Date: August 5, 2024

QUESTIONS

STRAIGHT ANSWERS.

Is it too late to claim damage from the August 5, 2024 storm?

Report it to your insurer as soon as you can. Alberta policies require prompt notice and every insurer interprets that differently, so the longer it's been the harder the conversation gets — but a well-documented storm is not the same as a hopeless claim. What carries a late report is a dated, itemized assessment tying the damage on your roof to an event the insurer already has on file.

How do I prove the damage came from this storm and not from age?

Hail damage has a recognisable signature — random-pattern impacts, granule loss concentrated at strike points, bruising you can feel — that reads differently from uniform weathering. Documenting that signature slope by slope with scale references, and reasoning from the damage pattern to the storm's track, is what establishes a date of loss. An assertion without that reasoning is not documentation.

My roof was replaced after this storm. Should I still get it looked at?

Possibly, for two reasons. Components that weren't replaced — vents, flashing, skylights, soft metals — take hail independently of the shingles and are frequently left out of a scope. And post-storm work in Calgary is done fast, in a supply crunch, by whoever was available; exposed nails, reused flashing and short nail patterns are common findings on roofs from those periods.

Do published loss estimates go up over time?

Regularly, and substantially. Insured-loss figures are revised as claims are counted — the July 2021 estimate more than doubled from its first published number. An early figure is never the final one, which is worth knowing when a contractor quotes you the scale of a storm.
