The right roof for a house in Phoenix is the wrong one for a house in Calgary. Here, a roof has to handle hail, snow, wind and wide temperature swings.

Weight, lifespan and cost tier
Lifespans here are published estimates from InterNACHI's chart unless noted, and they assume normal wear, not a direct hit from a big hailstorm. Cost tiers are relative to asphalt.
Read the lifespan column with two cautions. First, a long-lived material only pays off if the rest of the roof keeps up. Flashing, underlayment and vents still wear out, and on a slate or tile roof those parts can need attention long before the covering does. Second, newer categories like synthetics and stone-coated steel haven't been on roofs long enough for independent charts to catch up, so their numbers lean on manufacturer warranties. A warranty tells you what the maker will stand behind, under its conditions. It isn't a measured lifespan. Where a manufacturer figure appears below, treat it that way.

Hail, material by material
Hail is the deciding factor for most Calgary homeowners, so it's worth a closer look.
- Asphalt. Standard shingles lose granules and can crack. Impact-rated shingles resist cracking better, but UL 2218 doesn't count granule loss or dents as failures. See impact ratings explained.
- Steel panels. InterNACHI notes panels resist denting well where they're supported, while metal shingles are more vulnerable because much of each piece is unsupported. Hail that damages a seam or trim can let water in.
- Dents and insurance. InterNACHI also notes that cosmetic damage generally isn't paid by insurers, though that varies with the insurer and the policy wording. Check yours.
- Stone-coated steel and composites. Manufacturers like DECRA and Euroshield list UL 2218 Class 4. Euroshield's published warranty covers hail up to 2 inches for 50 years. That's a manufacturer term, so read the conditions.
- Cedar. IBHS notes some certified cedar products have withstood the Class 4 test, and that new shakes weather to the same general grey as the rest of the roof, so a single replacement blends in over time.
- Slate and tile. Rigid materials don't dent, they crack. FM 4473 exists specifically to rate them, and a cracked tile needs replacing.
Fire and structure
Roof coverings are fire-rated Class A, B or C under ASTM E108 / UL 790, with Class A the most resistant. IBHS notes the fibreglass in asphalt shingles helps them meet Class A. According to IBHS, untreated cedar shakes are unrated, meaning they don't meet even Class C. Fire-retardant-treated cedar products can achieve Class A, B or C ratings.
Weight is the other hard limit. A house framed for asphalt shingles may not be able to carry slate or tile. IBHS's roof guidance notes that before a tile roof goes on, the sheathing must be able to support the load of the tile, and snow sits on top of that weight. If you're considering a heavy material on an existing house, it's worth getting a structural engineer's opinion before a roofing quote.
Choosing for your house
A few questions narrow the field quickly.
- How much does hail worry you? If it's the top concern, compare impact-rated products in every category you're considering, not just categories.
- Can the structure carry it? Rule out slate and tile unless the house was built for them or an engineer approves.
- How long will you own the house? A longer-lasting material pays off only if you're there to benefit, or if it adds value at sale.
- What does your insurer say? Ask about impact-rated credits and cosmetic-damage exclusions before you buy.
- Who will maintain and repair it? Asphalt shingles are widely installed and repaired. Specialty materials may need specialty trades, and matching parts can be harder to find years later.
What is the best roofing material for hail in Calgary?
There isn't one winner. Some stone-coated steel and rubber composite products list Class 4 ratings, steel panels resist denting where supported but hail can damage seams, and Class 4 asphalt shingles give a rated product in the lowest-cost category. Compare specific products, and ask your insurer how each would be treated after a storm.
Is a metal roof worth it in Calgary?
It can be if you plan to stay a long time. InterNACHI lists metal at 40 to 80 years. The trade-offs are higher upfront cost, dents from hail that insurers may treat as cosmetic, and snow sliding off in sheets.
Can my house support a tile or slate roof?
Not necessarily. Slate and tile are much heavier than asphalt, and Calgary snow adds to that load. A house not built for them needs a structural engineer to assess the framing first.
Are cedar shake roofs a fire risk?
Untreated cedar shakes are unrated for fire, according to IBHS. Fire-retardant-treated cedar products can achieve Class A, B or C ratings. If fire is a concern, confirm the rating of the specific product.
Are rubber roofs good in Calgary?
Rubber composite products like Euroshield are lightweight, carry UL 2218 Class 4 listings and come with manufacturer hail warranties. As with any product, read the warranty conditions and compare the cost against Class 4 asphalt or steel.
