The old field had reached the end of it — worn through, patched around the penetrations, and not worth another repair. Off to the deck, synthetic underlayment across the whole field, and every pipe penetration got a new boot rather than fresh sealant around a tired one, which is where these roofs usually start leaking again.
The before shot and the deck shot exist for the same reason on every job: once the new field is on, nobody can see what it replaced. Photographing the worn field and the exposed deck is what makes the scope defensible later.
