This is the work most of this site is about, and it is almost never shown. The chalk is not decoration: a marked-out test square with the qualifying impacts circled inside it is how a hail assessment becomes checkable by somebody who was never on the roof. Anyone can say a roof has hail damage. This is what it looks like to demonstrate it.
Test squares laid out and chalked, impacts circled inside them, and the soft metals photographed separately — dented flashing and vent caps record hail unambiguously and corroborate field damage that is far harder to see. An assessment that skips the soft metals leaves the easiest evidence sitting on the roof.
